DORIS DUKE FOUNDATION

Building strategies for pioneers in health equity.

Building strategies for pioneers in health equity.

The Doris Duke Foundation tapped SteegeThomson to partner on a critical initiative to raise national awareness of racial biases in clinical algorithms. The initiative emphasizes the need to reconsider the use of race in equations that guide scientific research and patient care, which in some cases negatively impacts the health of people of color. We supported the Foundation by developing messaging and a social media campaign for the effort, and announcing both the initiative and the initial cohort of grantee organizations, all strategically selected to drive progress on this issue.

Our media outreach resulted in robust coverage, including journalist attendance from STAT and The New York Times at a kickoff meeting at the National Academies of Medicine in Washington D.C., and original reporting in STAT, The Chronicle of Philanthropy, Science Magazine, Black Enterprise, Yahoo News, Healio, Philanthropy New York, and Philanthropy News Digest, as well as extensive distribution via the Associated Press.

AMERICAN HEALTHCARE JOURNALISTS’ CONFERENCE

Our engagement included the development of a brand and presence at the Association of Health Care Journalists’ annual conference in New York City. A visual identity — When Racial Bias Hides in Plain Sight — and a branded booth and materials provided a primer on the history, necessity, and current activity around equity in medical algorithms.

CATALYZING CHANGE; ENCODING EQUITY

In a third brand presentation, we brought Encoding Equity  — a racial equity alliance spearheaded by DDF & the Council of Medical Specialty Societies (CMSS) — to life at a seminal gathering of leaders in health equity at the National Academies in Washington, DC. In partnership with DDF and CMSS, we developed a brand for the program, Together to Catalyze Change for Racial Equity in Clinical Algorithms. Our creative included conference signage and a microsite designed to be the online hub for a rapidly growing community of changemakers.
